  • About
The largest of the four remaining African grocery stores in Brixton Village, Viva Afro sells just about every African foodstuff you can imagine along with the utensils you need to prepare it. Beautiful bowls sit beside huge carved wooden pestle and mortars and spoons big enough to stir pots for 40 people. A wide selection of dried herbs, peppers and stockfish fill the newspaper-lined baskets outside.

Inside there are shelves upon shelves of appealing tins, bottles and foil-backed packages holding dried prawns, egusi seeds and mixes for suya. There are containers of palm oil large enough to be classed as a barrel and a huge selection of pastes and spices. The shop is constantly busy with shoppers stocking up on rare cooking ingredients or tastes that remind them of home. In the summer months you often see huge baskets of African land snails outside.
