The onion - the oldest known vegetable in the world - was among the foodstuffs which fed the Egyptian workmen building the Pyramids. Today, this versatile vegetable is served fried, sautéed, boiled, baked, creamed and stuffed.
I used to love the great sandwiches of fried onions, red peppers and sliced hot sausages we enjoyed in America when I was young. Made of slices of bread with this hot, savoury mixture inside, they were almost a meal in themselves. And in the summer, there were fresh-tasting salads - red, green and white - containing sliced onion rings, tomatoes and green peppers.
