  • About
Native to eastern Asia and North America, ginseng encompasses eleven different species of perennial plants grown mostly for the medicinal value of their roots. Each species has its own set of characteristics, but all contain complex ginsenoside compounds responsible for various health effects. According to Chinese medicine, ginseng consumption brings the body’s yin and yang into equilibrium, with different effects associated with American and Asian species. In general, the root is believed to boost energy and to promote men’s health, and is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Some studies have shown that ginseng can increase the quality of life for cancer patients and may even prevent breast cancer, though research results vary and are somewhat contradictory. Ginseng is usually sold as a dried herbal supplement and taken orally. It is also found in some energy drinks and teas.
