A sure sign of whether a radish is fresh is the vibrancy of its greens. In spring and summer, table radishes abound at farmers’ markets, including the colorful Easter Egg ones, but red Cherry Belle radishes can be found year-round at the grocery store. Black radishes are in season from fall through early spring and are usually sold with their greens already clipped. Daikon and other Asian varieties are available year-round at Asian markets and some supermarkets. Some less common varieties, like Watermelon radishes, are available intermittently throughout the year. All radishes should have smooth, unblemished skins and show no sign of dryness or cracking. They should be heavy for their size, an indication of their moisture content.
