Yams, which are typically bland and filling, are a significant source of calories and nutrition for many cultures around the world. They are between 15 and 40 percent starch and have about as much protein as a potato. Most species contain about 110 calories in a 3½-ounce/100-gram serving. Yams are generally high in vitamins C and B6, potassium, manganese, and dietary fiber.
