We ask quite a bit of our soil. As plants grow, they take in and use vital nutrients from the soil and growing media. Nutrients are not infinite, and it is our job as organic gardeners to help replenish the soil. This is why I tend to focus on feeding the soil rather than feeding the plants. This topic and its associated science could fill an entire book. I will highlight key elements and tips that home gardeners can apply practically in their gardens.
My preference is to always use organic fertilizers that focus on supporting the soil and the living things within it. By feeding the soil, we are feeding the worms and other organisms that will create the nutrients needed by our plants. For the home gardener, the available options can seem daunting. However, as more home gardeners embrace organic and regenerative practices, the marketplace is responding, so there is no shortage of products to choose from.
