  • About
Little neighborhood bakeries still grace the main streets in Switzerland, from the bustling cities to the tiniest Alpine villages. The bread they sell is one of Switzerland’s most important daily staples and, according to the Swiss Bread Association, 98% of the population consumes it; many on a daily basis.

There are over 200 different kinds of bread produced in Switzerland. There are breads for the daily feeding of families: from the standard, toothsome white and whole wheat breads to ones made with grains like spelt and rye. There are little milk buns perfect for skewering with sticks of chocolate, and pretzel buns that make the world’s best sandwiches. There is special bread for feasting and celebrating, bread made to look like boys, bread spiced with saffron, bread hiding kings, and the king of Swiss breads–the beautiful, plaited Zopf that graces so many Sunday breakfast tables. You’ll find all these breads on the following pages.
