If you look hard enough, it seems every culture has some little guilty-pleasure-in-a-jar that captivates the imagination and palate of its citizens and turns ordinary people into enthusiastic, even rabid and perhaps slightly gluttonous, fans. These sweet treats are easy to eat and easy to find, and at some point have all been eaten alone with a spoon or licked from fingers when no one is looking. They sit innocuously in the back of the fridge or on the pantry shelf with all the other staples, as much a part of daily life as milk and bread.
