Tusheti is a spectacular mountainous region in the North Caucausus where small villages at nearly 2,000 metres (6,562 feet) nestle in valleys surrounded by soaring peaks of up to 4,800 (15,748 feet). The Tushetians were effectively an autonomous regional group until the late 17th century. They divide into two main groups, the Chagma- and the Tsova-Tush. (The Tsova speak Bats, a Nakh language related to Chechen and Ingush, whereas the Chagma speak a Georgian dialect.)
