In the new movement of Georgian qvevri wines of the last 15 years, no institution has become as well known or been as symbolically important as the Alaverdi Monastery. The rebirth of this ancient art – which never stopped or disappeared completely – assumes a different dimension when you see it being practised within the walls of a majestic 11th-century monastery. Their qvevri wines, bottled and sold under the “Since 1011” brand are exported internationally and the monastery remains a must-see destination for visitors to Georgia, both for religious culture and wine.
