Gremi was the medieval capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti, an important trading town on the Silk Road that was razed by the Persians in 1615. (Telavi became Kakheti’s capital in the 17th century). Today Gremi’s 16th-century Church of the Archangels – with beautiful complete frescoes – and citadel, or Royal Tower, remain and have been put onto the Tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
