  • About
This magnificent Sunday food market attracts people from Georgia and nearby Azerbaijan; it’s eastern Georgia’s largest market. I love wandering the lanes of everything from live chickens and squealing piglets to fresh vegetables, foraged greens, spices, walnuts, cheeses and hand-churned butter.

Butcher’s stall at Bodbiskhevi market

The butcher’s section is one of the most powerful spectacles you’ll see in Georgia, though not perhaps an easy sight for those used to the sanitized, supermarket image of meat. Here you are reminded, quite rightly, that our food comes thanks to the sacrifice of very real creatures. The meat from animals whose lives have been spent roaming the countryside and eating what they choose attracts the discerning eyes of those who will cook it.
