Didimi Maghlakelidze lives in Dimi village on the southern side of the wide Rioni River plain south of Kutaisi, close to the large town, Baghdati. To get there you drive across the Ajameti Reserve, a centre of managed biodiversity with forests containing centuries-old trees.
I am fortunate to visit the charming Didimi on the day he and his wife and friends are harvesting their high-pergola Krakhuna (Krahuna) vines. With his nephew Ramaz Nikoladze’s help he’s been bottling since 2011 – and his wines are always in demand – but Didimi says he’s thinking of scaling back.
