Vani (or Surium as it was probably called in ancient times) was a centre of ancient Colchis (Kolkheti) from the 8th to the 1st century bc and will be of interest to lovers of archœology. Its site and museum, near the border with Guria, show many of the finest artefacts from Colchis, including intricate gold jewellery (though some of the best finds are now housed in the National Museum in Tbilisi). In the 4th century bc, people were buried in clay qvevri, as findings from this site attest.
