No wine is made in these areas for the altitudes are too high to grow grapes, but you’ll be offered grain-distilled spirits, fruit-based alcohols and barley beer. There’s wholesome, warming food to be found in hearty khinkali dumplings or cheese- and potato-filled breads. Cabbage, potatoes and river trout are abundant, as are lamb and other meats and cheeses from the many herds that pasture here in summer. Nomadic beekeepers produce wonderful honey in the mountains.
