It may seem overwhelming at first glance, but once you stock a basic pantry you can consider yourself set. All you need to do in the future is replace what is used up. Don’t buy jumbo sizes—remember, the fresher, the better. Initially choose brands you are familiar with and always buy those of high quality, but keep an eye out for new products coming into the market. Once you have your basic pantry, enjoy all the pleasures of shopping for glorious fresh ingredients as you need them.
A basic pantry should always have a wide selection of dried herbs and spices. Be sure to store yours in a cool place out of the light. If kept over the stove or in a spice rack on the wall, they begin to oxidize and lose flavor quickly.
