Even though I am now eating gluten free, it has not altered my general cooking philosophy. For years, I have looked to the seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs I find at farmers’ markets to inform my home-cooked meals and this still remains true. Relying on fresh produce means I need to do little to them to help the ingredients shine, which in turn helps me create quick and easy meals any night of the week.
Although a great reason to eat seasonally is that the produce simply tastes good when it is able to grow and thrive in its natural climate conditions, I find that in-season fruits and vegetables often cost less than foods that are brought in from far-away places, especially when farmers have a generous supply of a particular item. Buying directly from the farmers adds enjoyment to my shopping routine and I appreciate being able to help these local purveyors keep their businesses thriving.
