Matt has always had a passion food and art, but rather than cultivate these interests through formal education, Matt was consistently drawn to the path of hands onexperience. This path took Matt on travels throughout Asia, where he was able to explore different food cultures. While traveling in Japan, he fell in love with the interplay of food, art and craftsmanship that goes into Japanese cuisine. The similar food culture of Hong Kong inspired Matt to go after his lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant. Working with business partner Lindsay Jang, he opened Yardbird in the Sheung Wan district of Hong Kong in July 2011. Inspired by the yakitori-ya restaurants of Japan, Yardbird specializes in Yakitori dishes of skeweredgrilled chicken. Yardbird has garnered a great deal of local and international praise and in February 2014 was ranked #45 on San Pellegrino’s list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Asia. In March 2013, Matt and Lindsay opened their second restaurant, RŌNIN, located in Central Hong Kong. RŌNIN is a dining bar with a focus on fish, seafood, and a curated selection of Japanese spirits. In May 2014, Matt and Lindsay decided to expand their culinary presence in Hong Kong once again by opening Sunday’s Grocery. Sunday’s Grocery is a liquor store, curated convenience store and take - away sandwich shop located in Kennedy Town - a neighborhood establishment offering a variety of drinks, food and artisanal products, with a focus on quality and creativity.
