Maintain the shape of your apple chips by cooking them with the metal rack on top—it works perfectly! Tart Granny Smith apples are our favorite for this recipe, but any variety you like will work well.


  • 1 apple
  • 1–2 teaspoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom


    Preheat the air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes.

    Using your mandolin, thinly slice the apple crosswise. With a knife, remove the center core and seeds.

    In a medium bowl, combine the olive oil, cinnamon, and cardamom. Add the apples and gently toss, ensuring both sides of the apple chips are coated.

    Transfer the apples to the fry basket and cover with the metal rack so they don’t fly up into the fan or heat element.

    Cook for 5–7 minutes. Flip the chips, cover with the metal rack, and cook for an additional 4–5 minutes. Remove the rack and repeat in 2-minute intervals until they’re as crisp as you like.
