Sticky Toffee Layer with Browned Buttercream

Dark, sticky and rich, this cake is a favourite on our autumn menu. You might think cooking the dates in Coca-Cola is a little strange, but we wanted to get as much dark, molasses-like flavour in it as we could without making the sponge too heavy, and this seemed to work.
