Cod has been a favourite fish in Britain for centuries. The British fishing fleet once travelled to Newfoundland to take advantage of the huge shoals of big fish they found there on the Grand Banks. They were salted on land both for the home market, and for selling on to countries enthusiastic about salt cod, primarily Spain and Portugal.
