A famous North American cake, this is my mother’s recipe, entitled ‘Old-fashioned’ in her 1929 copy of Anyone Can Bake. As a child my job was to pick and prepare the strawberries while she made the cake. Then I’d watch her pull apart the layers, cover one with the fruit, the other with thick cream and then sandwich them. Serve the cake straight away while warm.
