These cookies are part of my childhood memories. My great aunt Elvira Pescatore Basile, who married my maternal grandmother’s brother Michele, always made them at the holidays. Although Zi’ Elvira was not Sicilian herself, she had learned to make them from an unidentified Sicilian woman. Back then, in the days before food processors, the almonds were crushed to a paste with a rolling pin!
