These Zimtwaffeln appear in centuries-old Dutch language and German cookery books, but a culture of cinnamon waffles further developed in German Saarland, where they have specialised decorative waffle irons for the purpose. In Belgium and Holland we favoured other waffles, so we lost our taste for strongly flavoured cinnamon waffles at some point in the early 19th century.
