The fresh green gungo pea season starts around November and if it wasn’t so warm we’d call it a winter crop. Most people in Jamaica take advantage by switching from ‘rice and peas’ made with red kidney beans to ‘gungo rice and peas’ for the holiday festivities. Gungo, which is a big favourite, is often cooked in coconut milk and made into stews and soups.
