As a foil for the spicy food of Banda Aceh they have the ultimate refreshing combination: filling glasses with grated cucumber and ice, then topping up with fresh limeade. It’s even better when everything is blitzed together.


  • 200 g (7 oz) cucumber, peeled, seeded and roughly chopped
  • 100 ml (scant ½ cup) lime juice (4-5 limes)
  • 70 g ( cup) caster sugar
  • ice
  • sparkling water


Put the cucumber in a high-speed blender with the lime juice, sugar and a handful of ice. Blend to a slush and taste for sweetness (remembering it will be diluted). Transfer to a jug with more ice and top up with a little sparkling water. Serve at once.
