Homemade dal makes a wonderful side dish to most curries. Eaten with naan bread or roti, it makes a spicy, creamy appetizer dish.
Put the lentils in a pan, then cover with water and add the turmeric and salt to taste. Cook until tender.
Heat a little vegetable oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds. Cook for a couple of minutes, then add the onions and stir-fry until brown. Stir in the ginger, garlic, and chili powder, then add the tomatoes.
Cook this sauce for about 20 minutes until puréed, then add the len
