One of the largest Belgian populations in the country settled in Door County and they brought with them the tradition of Kermess, the roistering harvest celebration in the fall that evokes Breughel more than the Kirk Messe, or Church Mass, for which it is named. This richly layered Belgian pie associated with Kermess is actually a cheesecake, an early Christian cousin of Lindy’s Cheescake and Lizzie Kander’s many cheese pies and kuchens.
