This versatile recipe comes from Ohio. If a little more flour is kneaded into the dough, it will become stiff enough to shape into pretzels, which are used as decorations on the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas tree.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500 g) pastry flour
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

Method

Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda three times in a deep bowl to distribute the soda evenly (see note). Make a well in the center of the flour.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then add the honey and molasses. Warm the mixture but do not let it boil. Pour into the well in the flour. Add the rum and vanilla, and stir toge
