Soak the bread in water, squeeze dry and crumble into a bowl. Add the meat, onions, garlic, herbs and seasoning and mix thoroughly. Shape into 12 small, flat round cakes on a floured board. Heat oil and butter in a large frying pan over a moderate heat and fry the hamburgers for three or four minutes on each side, depending on how well you like them cooked.
