When we were young my parents would throw big New Year’s Eve parties. The Hebrew calendar starts in September with the high holy festival Rosh Hashanah, but because all the South Africans were celebrating New Year in January, my parents would invite their Israeli friends over on that evening. There would always be loud music, they would always braai, and the starter was always chicken livers cooked on one of those big, flat griddle pans with lots and lots and lots of onions. My parents and
