This moist, tender spongecake combines perfectly with an assortment of creams, such as the rich custard filling in Boston Trifle and the strawberry mousse in Strawberry Window Cake.

For a simple dessert, split the cake into two or three equal layers; fill with fresh sliced strawberries, raspberries and/or blueberries and frost the top and sides with sweetened whipped cream.
