This cocktail pays homage to France’s two powerful weapons—guns and champagne. The French 75mm field gun was a hit overseas during World War I, with American soldiers returning home to praise the small cannon’s success in battle. By around 1920, a drink with the same name began to surface in New Orleans’s French Quarter.
