We still have the traditional ‘tattie’ holiday in the Highlands – a fortnight in October when the schools close so that the children can help harvest the crops of potatoes. Few children help with the harvest nowadays but it demonstrates how important the potato crop was to farmers, crofters and rural households in the past. At one time the diet of the Highlanders was dependent on the tattie as it could grow in poor soil and fill the belly but this led to famine in 1846 when blight destroyed
