This variation on a Manhattan strikes the right balance between sweet and bitter, and it lends a nice effervescence and sophistication worthy of a cocktail party. The recipe was developed by William “Cocktail Bill” Boothby, a bartender and author who tended bar at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco in the years just before the earthquake of 1906 reduced much of the city to ruins.
