Paying homage to the royal family was a tried-and-tested way to make a recipe sound suitably upmarket. The Prince of Wales is the title given to the (male) heir to the throne, who at the time of Downton was Edward, later Edward VIII, notable for his good looks, dapper dress sense, and many love affairs, often with married women. He appears briefly in Downton and is the reason for Lady Mary’s brief career as a burglar, when she tries to retrieve one of his love letters, stolen
