Method

Take one pound of granulated sugar, and set it on the fire, and stir with a wooden spoon until thoroughly dissolved, and burnt black. Add one quart of water, and let it boil until thoroughly dissolved. Reduce to half the quantity, and strain and bottle for use. To make colored sugar, add a little coloring and mix thoroughly. Then dry in an oven, sift, and keep in a jar.
