A chahkee is a vegetable curry.


  • 1 lb (450 g) potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 oz (50 g) vegetable oil or ghee
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground chillies
  • ½ teaspoon ground tumeric
  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped
  • Sea salt


Heat the oil and brown all the ingredients except the potatoes. Add the potatoes, stirring round the pan and allow to cook for about 10–15 minutes. Add ½ pint (275 ml) water, bring to the boil and simmer until the potatoes are cooked.

In Spain and Italy the potato is called Patata; in Finland, Peruna; in Columbia, Papa; in Romania, Cartofi; in Russia and Germany, Kartoffel and in the Czech Republic, Brambor.
