Gooseberries and apples seem to have the most pleasant affinity, but you can substitute firm-ripe Bose pears very nicely in this easy-to-assemble, old-timey sweet.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • Pinch

Method

  1. Blend sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a mixing bowl; toss with gooseberries and apples until evenly coated. Scrape into well-buttered, shallow baking dish of 4-5-cup capacity, preferably about 9 inches in diameter.
  2. Blend oats, flour, sugar, and allspice in the mixing bowl (wipe it out first). Add butter; pinch and squeeze to make coarse crumbs. Strew evenly over
