This recipe is inspired by the highly popular appelflappen that are readily available across the Netherlands: flakey pastry, dusted with sugar and filled with sweet, syrupy cooked apples. In Dutch supermarkets, you can buy packages of puff pastry containing ten 12-cm squares, almost begging for the pastry to be made—all you need to do is stuff it with the apple, fold it diagonally, and bake.
