Captains of Portuguese Pop Music, Os Capitães da Areia come with attitude: “We are the princes of pop and we’re here to stay.” They emerged from a series of accidents that began with Manuel Fúria proposing to Pedro de Tróia the challenge of making a band with pop roots, born in Lisbon but aimed at changing the national scene. Thus followed the opportunity to look for other elements for the project, these arriving with Tiago Brito on guitar, António Moura on drums and Inês Franco on audio and video effects. This was a new group boasting prolific compositional abilities, pre-destined to have Manuel Fúria as best man and producer of the debut album on the Love Fury label. The happy coincidence of bringing together strangers in a way that doesn’t always bode well brought success for this group of Lisboetas who want nothing more than to make the audience dance and sing the choruses of their songs. This is a group that takes very seriously its merry way of presenting problems – with hope, with optimism, with a desire to make the audience laugh and especially dance. And that has an indomitable will to reinvent pop music. Boys and girls of Portugal, prepare for the era of Os Capitães da Areia.
