  • About

Works: West Oakland, since 1981

Regular order: Gumbo

This is an amazingly creative area, full of artists and craftspeople. There’s a blacksmith across the street from us. Dorothy Lenahan’s glass studio is here. Paul Discoe’s Japanese joinery shop is here. There’s even a samurai sword maker down the street. We were here when the earthquake happened in 1989. We ran out of the building and saw plumes of black smoke rising. Cars were burning. And then we thought, “The view looks different.” It took a moment to register that the freeway was gone. We drove over to see if we could help take people to the hospital. Our neighbors brought ladders and forklifts to help pull people out of the rubble.
