The nigella seed comes from a flowering plant — Nigella Sativa — that belongs to the onion family. In each petal of the flower a few seeds are found. While the black seeds are tiny, they are big on flavour with a strong smoky aroma and nutty flavour. They are always kept whole and are used in a myriad of curries, dals and salads. I also love to scatter them on top of homemade naan bread.
