How you like your dal is up to you. You may prefer a soupy or thick consistency, like porridge. I tend to gravitate slightly more towards the former, but it is totally down to personal preference. At the temples in India, thousands are fed vegan food each day if they show up at the right time. The dal is watery but works so well poured over a little rice. The ratio of water to lentils varies between 300-400ml of water to every 100g of lentils, depending on the type of lentils. Play around with these ratios and decide which consistency you prefer. There is no right or wrong answer.
