Russian for pie, these semicircular pastries are made from various pastries or yeasted doughs. They are either baked or deep-fried and fillings include rice, fish, game, poultry, vegetables or cream. Pirozhki are served as an accompaniment to soup, especially borscht, with sour cream, or as a snack or hot starter.
