The gut is connected to the brain via the vagus nerve, the enteric nervous system, and the gut-brain axis. Several studies indicate that good gut health and a balanced microbiome may help with depression, anxiety and other psychological disorders. Most of our serotonin is created in the gut, and the more balanced the microbiome, the more serotonin.
