Jiaozi are Chinese meat dumplings (see also dumplings of Asia), which constitute a meal on their own and are always eaten during Chinese New Year, reinforcing family reunions which take place at that time. Dr Yan-Kit So (1992) remarks: ‘It has often been said that they are the best peacemakers for, in the rolling of the skins followed by the stuffing of them and then the cooking, the ice is bound to be broken and peace made between feuding parties in the family.’

Thinly rolled-out dough is usually stuffed with minced pork and chives or cabbage. The dumplings are then either poached or fried, and eaten with dipping sauces, soy sauce, or other side dishes.
