  • About

mamoncillo or genip(a) the fruit of Melicoccus bijugatus, a large tropical/ subtropical tree which is native to Colombia and Venezuela and nearby areas and is related to the akee. The fruit is also known as honeyberry (a reflection of the generic name, meli meaning honey and kokkos meaning berry).

The cherry-sized green fruit looks like a small lime and is sometimes also called Spanish lime or (in the Dominican Republic) limoncillo. It has a single seed, large and hard, or two seeds flattened together so that they look like one. The sweet, gummy pulp surrounding the seeds is orange-pink in colour and has a refreshing flavour, reminiscent of grapes. The seeds may be roasted like chestnuts; and were eaten in this way, as a substitute for cassava, by the Indians of Orinoco.
