  • About

threadfin bream breamlike fish of the family Nemipteridae, most but not all of whose members have a long filament extending backwards from the tail fin. The species Nemipterus japonicus is a common one in SE Asian waters; its market length is around 20 cm (8") and its body, pink above and yellow below, bears longitudinal stripes. The white tender flesh makes good eating.

Two other species well known at Hong Kong are N. virgatus, hung sam (golden thread), a larger fish; and N. bathybius, wong to (yellow belly).
