Buckwheat - a plant related to rhubarb and sorrel, it isn’t actually a cereal, it is a seed. It is very hardy and can grow in cold areas with bad soil - so it has been used in parts of Japan and Eastern Europe where other crops can’t survive. A staple in soba noodles (Japan) and blinis (Russia) and it produces buckwheat flour.
